Animal Totems - What Are They?

by Tammy Thomas

The history of animal totems goes all the way back to the earliest days of Greek mythology. The animal totem, also referred to as spirit animal or power animal are symbols of particular tribes representing their individual families. The depiction of an animal reflects the lineage of the tribe and is a powerful reminder of their ancestors and creation stories.

For example, the Bear Clan of the Hopi are the Honngyam or Hona-wunga and the Plains Indian tribes whose Bear clans are called the Caddo and Osage, both view Bear as a symbol of courage and strength.

Most tribes believe that each of their people has their own totem, an animal guide who is with them for life and will often first appear in dreams or visions. A person’s power animal follows them into life, teaching them, helping them stay their path and offering protection when needed.

Some Native American tribes believe that each person is connected with nine different animals. Some of the power animals will come and go depending upon what lessons are being learned. Only after a task is accomplished or a new idea is understood will the totem move on to make room for the teachings of one of the others.

Although one may have multiple totems, almost all tribes believe there is one that acts as the main guardian. You may share a special connection with it or have always had a special interest in that particular animal. Many people will become aware of their power animal through vivid dreams or become drawn to it as young children.

Animal Totems also include supernatural and mythological creatures of various legends, and all have a special meaning and significance. Animal Totems can be called upon by an individual or a tribe for its special powers to help with any kind of adversity or for counsel in difficult situations.

Discovering your own power animal is an exciting and empowering experience. Once identified, you will most likely begin seeing it everywhere; on television, in magazines or even standing in line at the supermarket, on the shirt of the person in front of you.

Honoring your totem is an important step in building your relationship with it. The Pueblo Indians of the Southwest US make small stone carvings of their power animals called Fetishes, and the energy of the animal is represented in the object.

The ways in which to honor your own power animals are unique to you and will help create your own special bond with it. Reading, writing, drawing or even thinking about your spirit animal are some simple ways to make a connection. In addition, learning how to do a Shamanic Journey is also an excellent way to discover and meet your power animal. Whatever path you choose, your imagination and creativity are the keys that unlock this powerful relationship.
